Brief description of the organization

NGO Center for civic initiative operates to develop and implement program and projects directed to the establishment and development of civil society with developed market economy in Tajikistan, develops, coordinates and conducts scientific researches in social, political, economic, cultural areas, prepares various publications on development of civil society, organizes different educational events, established information networks to exchange with information and etc.  The main objectives of the Center – is protection of civil and socio economic interests, conduction of advocacy campaigns, establishment of legitimate information system accessible for population that satisfy their needs and interests, raising the level of civil, legal, cultural, economic and environmental education, provide legal and expert consulting services to individuals and organizations.

The main goal of Center for civic initiative is to promote development and implementation of different programs and projects, focused on establishment and development of open democratic civil society in Tajikistan.

Main implemented projects

 

Since 2001 the Center for Civic Initiative was engaged in identifying of problems and development needs of different areas, initiated and coordination implementation of different projects of organizations participated in coalition projects.

 

To implement these programs Center for Civic Initiative engaged different non government and professional organization from the entire country, establishing flexible structure for implementation of program tasks. Using potential of NGO across the country, Center for Civic Initiative created a good partnership of these organization with various government structures and among NGOs.

 

2002 – the Center initiated research in Khatlon and Soghd Oblasts and 10 Districts of RRS on “Role of education in social development of local communities”, “Cultural Diversity and Tolerance Education”, in which members of 4 organizations including staff of the Center participated.

 

2002-2003 –conducted a Program of trainings for vulnerable families – “School for all”, where 3 non profit organization and professors of Tajik State Pedagogical University participated.

 

In 2002 the Center for Civic Initiative launched a coalition project “Tolerance and diversity – vision of 21 century” to prevent regionalism in youth and official environment financed by Мercy Corps in Tajikistan. Participants of the project were 200 pupils and young peopel, 50 government officials of the Department of State Service under the President of Tajikistan, trainings were conducted by 2 non profit organizations.

 

In 2003 the Center for Civic Initiative  in partnership with NGO “Civil Society” implemented coalition project financed by OSCE Office in Tajikistan, under the framework of which conducted monitoring and advocacy campaign on access to education and information in native language for pupils from ethnic minorities of Tajikistan.

 

2003 – Initiated a project on training of staff of local government authorities (Hukumats and Jamoats) in 10 Districts of Rayons of Republican Subordination and Khatlon Oblast on human rights. There was a course developed under the framework of project “Human Rights for Government Employees”.

 

2004 – Implemented a project “Human rights: You and your rights” for pupils of international boarding school “Ufuq” supported by Swiss Cooperation Office.

 

2005 – Members of the organization participated in monitoring of human rights on 17 and 18 Articles of International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights supported by Swiss Cooperation Office in Tajikistan.

 

2006 – Provided consulting services to NGO “Allavida” (Great Britain) on implementation of research project  “Development of civil society in Tajikistan” .

2006 - 2008 – implementation of project “Sthrengthening of cooperation between civil society organizations and the government” supported by Aga Khan Foundation in Tajikistan.

Brief description of the organization

Public association “Gender and Development” was registered in November 2000. Organization continues the work of Bureau “Women in Development”, that was established in 1995 by the Government of the Republic of Tajikistan by financial and technical assistance provided by UNDP. The organization made a great contribution in establishment, development and capacity building of most of local women NGOs, published magazine “Sabo”, prepared reports on “Gender relations in Tajikistan” and “Tajikistan: towards gender equality”. The organization participates in informational network of the Regional Bureau to support “Gender in Development” supported by UNDP,

World Organization to study women’s problem, Women’s Rights Action Watch Asia Pacific, Women’s World Summit Foundation, Central Asian Sustainable Development Information Network (CASDIN) and etc.

Methods of work: discussion of the draft legislation with representatives of NGOs and media, introducing of proposals, conduction of public/ parliamentary hearings and etc.

Brief description of the organization

“Femida” Center started its activity in June 2005. Organization is established to promote, protect and implement human rights, as well as assist in establishment of democratic and legal reforms in the Republic of Tajikistan. As organization is human rights watch the main goal of it is to protect human rights and interest of poor population. The staff of “Femida” Center consists of 8 people – highly qualified lawyers with experience in civil and criminal proceedings. Basically, this is highly qualified lawyers with extensive experience in human rights in NGOs as lawyers and trainers. The staff of the organization participated in preparation of legal guidelines “Elements  of Family Law”, “Marriage contract”, and “Dehkonzan”.

Main activity of “Femida” Center :

-  Provision of access to free legal assistance;

-  Protection in courts, law enforcement government and other administrative agencies.

-  Reducing violence against women, children and old parents;

-  Achieving equal access to justice.

-  Improving legal literacy of population.

  1. 1. Project “Domestic Violence” supported by  MAMA CASH – Netherlands.

Implementation period– December 2006.

The goal of the project is to eliminate the effect of violence against women and promote public reaction on violence against women.

Under the framework of this project there were 8 seminars conducted among local mahalla population and graduates of secondary schools on “What is violence”, “How to to prevent violence” and “Where to go if you have been the object of violence”.  There were seminars conducted jointly with representatives of Committee of Women and Youth Affairs under the Hukumat of Dushanbe city; published and distributed 1000 copies of booklets with information on gender based violence, with advices to women on development of plan for personal safety.

 

  1. 2. Project “Marriage Contract” supported by World Bank Office in Tajikistan.

Implementation period -  2006.

The aim of the project is to assist in enhancing legal literacy for personnel of registry offices, notary offices, representatives of Committees on Women Affairs, representatives of youth committees under local government authorities and leaders of Jamoats, and provision of trainings related to the practical implementation of Article 40 of Family Code of the Republic of Tajikistan on “Conclusion of marriage contract, it content and effect”.

Under the framework of the project, brochures and booklets were prepared and published, conducted seminars with personnel of registry offices, notary offices, and courts for 6 regions of the Republic. Also there was social questioning of population conducted on “People’s Attitude towards Marriage Contract”.

 

  1. 3. Project “Women’s right to land” supported by US Embassy Democracy Commission.

Implementation period– November 2007.

This project is being implemented up to date. The project aims to ensure women’s access to land through a range of activities that include conduction of seminars and provision of legal assistance to the rural population.

Public analytical education organization “Gender Policy Center was registered on 16.09.2005 by support of OSI  (Soros Foundation). Registration No. 1648. The organization was established on the basis of the initiative working group that was involved in publication of newsletter “Gender and Society” published by Gender Research Center of OSI (Soros Foundation). The founders include experience journalists and experts on gender issues.

Implemented: For its implementation period NGO supported by OSI (Soros Foundation), UNDP and OSCE established magazine “Ravzana ba Jahon” (Window to the World) and “Ravzana” website, that focused in highlighting of gender issues. Magazine was registered in the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Tajikistan on 21.09.2006 under No. 3219. In 2007 magazine was published 4 times a year by support of OSCE.  In the current year it is planned to publish the magazine 6 times per year.

 

NGO has its representatives in Kurgan Tyube, Khujand and Khorog cities.

 

NGO is a member of a group of organizations– founders of International Association of Women from Persian language countries.

 

Ongoing: Conduction of educational-outreach activities (round tables, conferences, seminars, courses);

More than 500 children, teenagers and young people aged from 0 to 21 years, who lives in poor families/or troubled families (broken family, parents – criminals, alcoholics, drug users or forced/labor migrants, refugees), who are under the risk to violate the law, migration, которые expression of drug addiction or diseases, related to reproductive health, orphans, children in conflict in law. Specialists who are working with vulnerable children and teenagers: teachers, social workers, NGO personnel and other related government structure staff, parents and volunteers.

Four public organizations established Civil Initiative Group “Atlantida”(2001); International NGO is under the registration, which along with representatives of NGOs and secondary schools  will have “Save Childhood”.

Teaching teenagers independently protect their rights; improving of physical, mental and emotional health of children through organization of recreational and educational  camps outside of city (in Varzob and Aini Districts), hiking, sport competitions, work in exercise rooms and rock climbing clubs, горным лыжам, парапланеризму, swimming, and also by provision of lectures on healthy life style and reproductive health in schools of city; involvement of children to healthy life style; establishment and development of children and teenagers’ volunteers teams to provide various types of assistant and support to vulnerable peers; provide free assistance to children victims of physical and psychical violence; protection of rights of vulnerable children and teenagers in investigation authorities, preliminary arrest, punishment facilities; provision of humanitarian and medical aid to orphan children’ homes of Dushanbe city.

Interregional program on prevention of violence in Central Asian Countries and Mongolio "Life without violence is our right”. Organization was Program Coordinator for Tajikistan (4 NGOs participated from Tajikistan);

Participated in lobbying of Law on Domestic Violence, on the previous program – meeting with delegate of Majlisi Oli Majlisi Namoyandagon, thematic information materials, calendars,  conduction of round tables and seminars.
